About Wallsend
Wallsend was named because in Roman times, it hosted the fort Segedunum which protected the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall. In dedication to the Romans, Latin signs are scattered around the town.
Wallsend has a history of shipbuilding and was home to the Wigham Richardson shipyard, which later formed into Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson, which is known for building the RMS Mauretania. The Mauretania was an express liner which held the Blue Riband, for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic for 22 years.
